Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar is one of India's foremost literary and theatre figures, recognised nationally for his contributions as a playwright, poet, folklorist, and cultural thinker. His honours include the Jnanpith Award for 2010, the Padma Shri in 2001, the Padma Bhushan in 2021, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.
A production based on Kambar's writing carries exceptional literary prestige. It represents an association not merely with a stage show, but with the work of a Jnanpith-winning dramatist whose voice is central to modern Indian theatre and literature.
The production is helmed by Zafer Mohiuddin, founder-president of Kathputliyaan Theatre Group and one of Karnataka's respected theatre voices. An architect by profession, he is also an acclaimed Urdu/Hindi writer, playwright, director, actor, and voice-over artist.
Active in theatre since 1979, he has worked with leading groups, including Samudaya and Bangalore Little Theatre. A crowning milestone of his career, amongst many, is his close 20-year association with the legendary Girish Karnad, with whom he adapted the masterpiece "The Dreams of Tipu Sultan" into Hindustani as "Tipu Sultan Ke Khwaab", masterfully weaving the authentic Dakhni dialect into the official text.
In November 2025, the Government of Karnataka honoured him with the State Rajyotsava Award for his contribution to theatre, Urdu literature, and cultural harmony.
His experience with history, language, and social themes makes him uniquely suited to direct Mehmood Gaawaan on a grand scale.
